One of the good things about my other job being running a home DIY website is that part of that job requires us to do updates to our home to show my audience just how inexpensive you can do things. It doesn’t take a ton of money to have a beautiful space!

Last spring, we finally got the chance to spruce up my home office space. Little did I know, less than a year later, I would need that space now more than ever. I loved having it for myself, but now that I’m doing things for other clients and creating things for my lovely people on this site (hint: that’s you!), I need the space to get into a clear head space so that I can create!

As I take you on a tour of my own office space, I’m going to give you some helpful tips to have your own DIY office makeover guide. Don’t worry, though – you don’t have to remember everything! I’ll give you a checklist if you’re interested so you can print it out now or later when you’re ready for your own office makeover! DIY Office Makeover Guide

Set a budget

Before you even make the first plan and dream dreams of your new space, think about how much you can or want to spend.

This was the starting point to my office. It’s at the top of our stairs and sits right outside our kids’ playroom. I knew I wanted to create a space that was easy for me to work, but that I could also keep an eye on the kids if they’re in this space playing or chasing each other.

We planned a lot for this project, including many DIY projects so our budget was SUPER low on this. If you want some wiggle room in your budget, you can do like I did and sell things in your current space you won’t use anymore and stash the cash away for your new space! An extra $30, $40, $50 can go a long way!

Plan and dream

Now is the time for mood boards! If you don’t know how to make your own mood boards, then it might be a good idea for you to just do a quick search on Pinterest to get some inspiration!

After some planning, we came up with this mood board for my office space. I’ve got Restoration Hardware taste on an Ikea budget, so, again, a lot of DIY projects were planned for this space to make it more personal.

Put a timestamp on it

Give yourself a reasonable amount of time to complete the project, but make sure you have a “due date” on this. Otherwise, you will find reason after reason to keep pushing it back.

For example, we completely transformed our space in 6 weeks. That included adding faux marble floor under the desk, creating a feature wall with wallpaper and several smaller projects like hacking $20 Ikea chairs and making a glass dry erase board.

Personalize it

I like giggling. I like dry humor. I also don’t like clutter. I brought in all of these things when creating my office. Do you love a certain show or movie? Bring it in! Does a certain piece of art spark your creative juices a’flowin’? Hang it up in your office!

My office space isn’t huge, but it serves the exact purpose I need it to. A dedicated space where I can spread out, plan, create, and do what I need for my clients.

If my space didn’t inspire you, I’ve rounded up over 15 more spaces, all done by regular people just like me with a dream, budget, and a plan! Check out some of these spaces below:
